Two men arrested in Malawi last week on homosexuality charges suffered more mistreatment than local newspapers stated.

According to a defendant, the Dec. 7 incident included:

  • One defendant’s house ransacked by neighbors,
  • An assault by neighbors,
  • Threats of being burned alive,
  • Attempted extortion by community police,
  • Insults from community police and members of the Malawi Police Service,
  • Unauthorized distribution by police of the defendants’ photos on social media,
  • Being paraded before the public in an attempt to humiliate them,
  • Being forced to strip,
  • Forced medical examinations of their privates, and
  • Forced HIV and STD tests.

Gift Trapence, executive director of the Malawian human rights organization CEDEP (Centre for the Development of People), which promotes the sexual health and human rights of minority groups, said:
