Tamara Adrian’s win is even more remarkable considering Venezuela does not allow people to legally transition
Tamara Adrian has become the first elected transgender MP in Venezuela.
This is remarkable considering the country does not even allow trans people to be recognized in their true gender.
The lawyer and activist was one of the 99 Democratic Unity politicians to win a seat at the National Assembly. She received an incredible 74.25% share of the votes.
‘Venezuela knows change is unstoppable,’ she said on Twitter. ‘Today we made history in Caracas. Progress will continue.’
On social media she was widely praised by her law students, where she teaches at Andres Bello Catholic University, her colleagues at the IGLA and her friends at the Network of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex of Venezuela.
