This is deeply troubling! Some gay men, and evidently some women, want to drop the T from LGBT. I will only address the fact that some gay men support this terrible idea. This plays into the negative feelings some in the trans community have toward gay men and reinforces the opinion that gay men are transphobic. These transmisogynistic men are not representative of the community as a whole. Sadly they do represent the view of some entitled, transphobic gay men. I would hope that our allies in the gay community would stand up to this bias. Thankful Gay Star News is doing just thst. Here’s an excerpt from Joe Morgan’s story…
A petition started by gay and bisexual men and women is calling for LGBTI news websites like Gay Star News as well as organizations such as GLAAD to stop representing the transgender community.
Spoiler! We’re not going to do that.
So far, 620 people have joined the campaign because they believe the fight for trans equality is ‘ultimately regressive and actually hostile to the goals of women and gay men’.
They claim women and gay/lesbian individuals are being ‘vilified’ and ‘harassed’ over people who disagree with trans equality. They cite Germaine Greer as an example of this.
The ‘feminist’ Greer had said: ‘Just because you lop off your cock and then wear a dress, doesn’t make you a fucking woman.
‘I’ve asked my doctor to give me long ears and liver spots and I’m going to wear a brown coat but that won’t turn me into a fucking cocker spaniel.’
The petition also cites transphobic arguments, such as saying that ‘men are claiming to be transgender demanding access to bathrooms and locker rooms’.
‘The appropriation and re-writing of gay and lesbian history and culture, most notably attempting to re-cast the majority gay white men who participated in the Stonewall riots as transgender,’ the petition also claims, ignoring how many of the people at Stonewall were either a trans woman, gender-fluid or a drag queen. About a third was white, a third black and a third Hispanic, according to eyewitness reports.
‘Most troubling, by persuading parents and health professionals to diagnose children as young as four as transgender, despite considerable research that shows that more than 90% of children who express “gender dysphoria” at a young age grow out of it by adolescence and, in most cases, grow up to be well-adjusted gay men and women; ideologically, it runs counter to traditional LGB and feminist philosophy – whereas feminists and gay men/women advocate for expanding and re-defining gender concepts, the trans movement is regressive, insisting upon re-asserting and codifying classic gender concepts of what is masculine and what is feminine.’
This is also heavily misinformed. Surveys suggest that children as young as four may experiment with gender roles and playing with their identity, but these are not trans children. Children who express consistent gender dysphoria throughout their young lives will transition at a later date.
While they say they are not ‘advocating intolerance or prejudice against the transgender community’, trans people cannot ‘infringe upon the rights of women, gay men and children’.
‘In the end, we feel that the transgender ideology is not compatible with the rights of women, gay men and children and ask that the organizations and media outlets mentioned above disassociate themselves from the transgender movement and return to representing their base support of gay men and lesbians.’
The petition has got traction on social media, with many feeling privileged gay men are ignoring that trans rights have a lot further to go in the US. After all, a minimum of 22 trans people have been killed in the US alone this year.
Jennie Kermode, trans activist, told Gay Star News: ‘Whilst I recognize that the sometimes different issues faced by the trans and LGB communities mean there are legitimate arguments for separation, I personally feel that our shared problems mean it remains useful to stand together, and it should also be obvious that the trans community includes people who are lesbian, gay and bisexual.
‘It’s sad to see arguments for separation made in such a hostile way by people who plainly don’t know very much about trans people and have latched onto a few instances of unpleasant behavior to tar a whole community.
‘Their persistent use of the term “ideology” compounds the impression that they are scientifically illiterate on the subject.
‘Their description of the Stonewall rioters suggests they have paid no attention to how those people identified later in life, and it is particularly sad to see them elide the actions of people of color from their take on Stonewall.
‘That said, I’m confident that their views do not represent those of the majority of LGB people, among whom the trans community has many wonderful allies.’
Gay Star News remains committed to covering trans and intersex people and their lives, ensuring diverse voices in the LGBTI community are writing news, features and opinion pieces on this website. We do not agree with the mission of this campaign.
