Here in South Dakota, we approach the notion of progress with great caution, ever mindful of being hoodwinked by those who claim that change can do us good.

That’s why it was noteworthy when the state activities association took a forward-thinking stance on the issue of transgender rights for students, following a national trend of preparedness when it comes to high school sports.

Given the media maelstrom surrounding Caitlin Jenner and broadened legal protection for those who identify with a gender other than the one they were assigned at birth, most viewed it as sound governance to adopt a policy that mirrored federal and regional trends.

But not the South Dakota Legislature, or at least a few of its lesser lights.
